Knowledge
The student who successfully completes the course will have the ability to master
essential tools needed to connect the geochemical features of magmas with the major geodynamic environments. He/she will be able to read and interpret, at a general level, the fundamental geochemical and isotopic tracers in order to identify the petrogenetic processes that govern the evolution of crust-mantle system. He/She will be able to use trace element and radiogenic isotope ratios to infer mantle composition, mantle reservoirs and mantle convection mode.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
During the oral exam the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the matter thoughtfully and with propriety of expression.
With the oral presentation, the student must demonstrate the ability to approach a circumscribed research problem, and organise an effective exposition of the results.
Methods:
- Final oral exam
- Final essay
Further information:
at the end of the course students can choose between oral exam with vote or submit an oral report on a topic of their choice.
Teaching methods
Delivery: face to face
Learning activities:
- attending lectures
- participation in seminar
- individual study
- Laboratory work
- Bibliography search
Attendance: Advised

Syllabus
The course covers the following subjects: Historical notes on the drift of continents. Plate boundaries: divergent, transform and convergent. Volcanism associated with the plate boundaries. Intraplate volcanism. Mantle plumes.
How to use geochemical and isotope data to identify the magma source and the geodynamic setting of ancient magmatic suites. The use of radiogenic isotopes in Geochronology and isotope Geology. Isotope geology of Sr, Nd, Pb, Hf and Os
and its applications to the study of igneous rocks.
Structure and composition of the Earth's mantle. Theories on its heterogeneity. Convective movements in the mantle. Layered, global convection and zoned. Relations between Geodynamics and geochemistry of magmas.
