Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who successfully completes the course will have the ability to acquire principles and methodologies of elemental and isotopic geochemistry useful for the study of geological processes of primary and secondary environment. She or He will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the mechanisms that govern the behavior of chemical elements and radiogenic and stable isotopes in solid (lithosphere), liquid (hydrosphere) and gasous (atmosphere)systems, for the understanding of main processes responsible for the origin and evolution of our planet.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
During the oral exam the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the main course contents showing that have mastered the content of the course and are able to address and resolve a geochemical issue.

Methods:

  • Final oral exam

Further information:
knowledge retention will be assessed through oral examination with vote

Teaching methods

Delivery: face to face

Learning activities:

  • individual study
  • Laboratory work

Attendance: Advised

Teaching methods:

  • Lectures
  • laboratory

Syllabus
The course covers the following topics: Origin of the chemical elements and their fractionation in the solar system. Geochemical differentiation in rocky planets. The properties of the elements and the geochemical classification. Radioactive decay and radiogenic isotopes. Stable isotopes. Distribution mode of elements in rocks forming minerals and main geochemical reservoirs. Composition, origin and evolution of the atmosphere and hydrosphere. Processes of water-rock interaction. Mobility of the elements in aqueous solutions and methods for its assessment. Processes of weathering and chemical fractionation of the elements in the exogenous environment.
Bibliography
All the lectures can be downloaded from http://polo3.elearning.unipi.it/login/index.php. Within the same site students can download a text file "Dispense di Geochimica". Recommended reading includes the following texts - G. Faure (1986): Principles of isotope geology (2nd ed.). J. Wiley & Sons, pp. 589. - H. Rollinson (1993): Using geochemical data: evaluation, presentation, interpretation. 352 pp. Longman. For the second part we recommend the following texts: - Dongarra Varrica G & D (2004): Geochemistry and Environment. EdiSES Naples. 226 pp.. - G. Faure (1992): Principles and Applications of Inorganic Geochemistry.Maxwell Macmillan International Editions, 626 pp.. - R. Gill (1996): Chemical Fundamentals of Geology. Chapman & Hall, pp 291.
