Knowledge
At the end of the course the student will have a broad, if shallow, overview of some of the several links between physics (and mathematics) and music, the basics of physical acoustics and should be able to learn and explore in more directions such connections.

The student has the option of presenting a short oral discussion on an agreed subject of his/her choice as the first part of the oral exam.

Syllabus
Introduction to acoustics: oscillations, spectra and Fourier analysis, autocorrelation, noise. Mechanical oscillators and coupling, normal modes. The simple vibrating string and its limits, string instruments and inharmonicity, Helmholtz motion. Vibrating membranes and drums. Sound propagation in air, impedance, wind instruments and the voice. Introduction to psychoacoustics, loudness and pitch.
Mathematics of musical scales. Digitization of sound and basics of lossy compression.

Recommended reading from selected chapters of several books is presented during the course according to the detailed program agreed with students.
