Knowledge
The student who successfully completes the course will have the ability to:
i) know the principles to manage and process the geo-data;
ii) become familiar with the use of a commercial software GIS (ArcGIS);
iii) test some of the possible applications of GIS in the field of agricultural science;
iv) understand the basics of cartography and the main geodetic datum of our country.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology. During the oral exam the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with propriety of expression.

Geographical Information Systems and Territorial Information System: principles and constituent elements. The geo-data: vector and raster. Notes on relational data-base.
Application of GIS to agricultural science: land use, physico-chemical characterization of soils, recycling of wastewater in agriculture,tourism on horseback.
The commercial and open source software. Computer-lab on ArcREader. Introduction to ArcGIS.
Elements of cartography. The scale. The geodetic datum. The projection systems. The main datum used in Italy.
