Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who successfully completes the course will have the ability to use different stratigraphic methods in order to decipher the geometry, the biotic composition and the time relationship of a fossiliferous succession; will be able to evaluate the fossil distribution in different palaeogeographic areas and in different depositional settings; will be able to use quantitative methods to recognize time relationship of sedimentary successions.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
During the oral exam the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully using the appropriate terminology. With the written report the student must demonstrate his/her ability to describe the fossil content and to apply the stratigraphic methods to a sedimentary succession.

Methods:

  • Final oral exam
  • Written report

Further information:
Knowledgeretention will be assessed through oral examination 50% and written report 50%.

Syllabus
The course covers the following topics: Fossils and time framing of geological events. The different kinds of stratigraphic units and categories. Stratotypes and type-localities. Correlations and relationships among the different kinds of stratigraphic units. The international stratigraphic chart. Quantitative biostratigraphy based on numerical methods. Chemical-physical methods in stratigraphy. Integrated stratigraphy. Laboratory techniques and application of biostratigraphic methods in selected stratigraphic successions.
Bibliography
Recommended reading includes the following works: Salvador A. (ed.), 1994 – International Stratigraphic Guide. Geological Society of America Prothero D. R., 1989 – Interpreting the stratigraphic record. Freeman & Co. New York. Lecture notes provided by the teacher. Further bibliography will be indicated.
