Knowledge
The student who successfully completes the course will be required to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the main psychophysiological processes underlying abnormal behavioral outputs (e.g. allostatic load in stressful chronic conditions, insomnia, depression, schizophrenia) as well as of neurological disorders including diagnosis and alternative taxonomies. He or she will be able to look critically at psychophysiological experiments in clinical conditions, and will have the ability to define a psychophysio-pathological problem, approach it and present the results in a structured way.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
- The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology. - During the oral exam the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with propriety of expression. - The student's ability to explain correctly the main topics presented during the course will be assessed.

Syllabus
The course provides notions on the main psychophysiological mechanisms subtending different abnormal behavioral outputs: 1) Principles of bio-physical bases of the main psychophysiological techniques (e.g. EEG, ERPs, fMRI) 2) Stress: Alterations of Long Term Potentiation/Depression, synaptic failure, alteration of hippocampal functions (e.g. reduction of neurogenesis). Examples of experiments. 3) Depression: anatomy and networks, pathological fear, anxiety. Examples of experiments. 4) Insomnia: alterations of sleep pattern, of Slow Wave Sleep (including less than 1Hz oscillations) and REM sleep; alterations of sleep functions and of thalamo-cortical networks. Examples of experiments. 5) Schizophrenia: anatomy and networks, pathological anatomical, effective and functional connectivity; abnormal neural development. Examples of experiments.
