Knowledge
The student who successfully completes the course will have the ability to design the most important utilities for industrial plants, such as piping for water conveying, steam production, compressed air distribution, fire fighting systems, air pollutant capture. Moreover the student will be able to perform economic feasibility analysis of industrial plants.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
The students must be able to demonstrate their knowledge about the operative functioning of industrial plant utilities and about the technical features of plant equipment. Moreover, they must demonstrate their capability to perform preliminary design of industrial utilities defining their layout, evaluating the operative features of the main equipment, calculating the plant performances and, finally, performing the economic assessment of their profitability.

Methods:

  • Final oral exam
  • Final written exam

Further information:
The final written exam is constituted by two practical problems and six questions. These are characterised both by open questions about the description of the functioning of some particular plant devices and by some simple numerical exercises about brief calculations. The written exam is considered adequate and the student can perform the oral exam, only if one of two practical problems are solved and the average mark is higher than 18/30. The oral exam is characterized by the discussion of the written exam and by some general questions about the topics of the course.

Teaching methods

Delivery: face to face

Learning activities:

  • attending lectures
  • individual study

Syllabus
The course provides notions about the design procedures for utilities of industrial plants. After a brief introduction about the general features of production systems, the methodologies for the design of utilities and for the profitability assessment of industrial plants are provided. Then, the specific procedures for the design of some particular utilities are presented. Hence, the course focuses on the piping for the conveying of water describing how to select its main components, such as pumps, how to mechanically design it, how to mount and protect it. Then, steam production plants for the industrial heating are described. The design methodologies of air compressed production and distribution are described. The design of fire-fighting systems are introduced. Finally, the systems for the mitigation of the air quality at the workplaces are proposed and the relative design methods are described.
