Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who successfully completes the course will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the history and current roles of Botanic Gardens; will be aware of the main type of collections held in Botanic Gardens and of their management; will have the ability to design scientifically sound popularisation programmes based on guided visits to Botanic Gardens; will be able to conduct compelling guided visits to Botanic Gardens with different visiting publics like e.g. schoolchildren, environmental associations, tourists.

Further information:
After completing the practical part in a botanic garden, students are expected to prepare a written report on the guided visits designed by themselves and on the experience gaind through contact with visitors. The report will be discussed at the final oral exam.

Syllabus
History of Botanic Gardens. Main botanic Gardens in Italy and in the world. MAnagement of botanical collections and their use in popularisation programmes. Designing and leading guided visits to Botanic Gardens. Guided visits to the Apuan Alps Botanic Garden "Pietro Pellegrini" and to the Pania di Corfino Alpine Garden "Maria Ansaldi". The course is structured in three parts as follows: 1) a theoretical part, including two 3-hrs front lessons – one in the campus, one in an external location; 2) two visits to Tuscan Botanic Gardens; 3) a practical part consisting in a 7-day stay in a Botanic Garden partner to the Department of Biology. During their stay, the students are committed to lead guided visits, to take care of interpretation signs, and to maintain exhibition layouts. Students are expected to produce a written report about their guided visit design and their contact with visitors.
