Learning outcomes
Knowledge
At the end of the course the student will acquire a solid knowledge on nutrition as a fundamental component to allow a normal growth and development of children and to prevent chronic diseases in adults. He will be able to use nutrition as a therapeutical support to cure children with metabolic, endocrine, renal, liver, and allergic diseases. The students will acquire the ability to set-up dietetic programs for patients with storage disease and inborn errors of metabolism.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
- The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology. - During the oral exam the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with propriety of expression. - The student must demonstrate the ability to put into practice and to execute, with critical awareness, the activities illustrated or carried out under the guidance of the teacher during the course.

Syllabus
The course provides notions on: - the physiology of growth processes and development in relation to nutrition; - the nutritional needs in infant, children and adolescents; - the nutritional approach to children with special needs and diseases; - the nutrition of the young athlete. The course will focus on techniques, such as carbohydrates counting, useful to cure children with diabetes mellitus. Part of the course is dedicated to set-up dietetic programs.
