Learning outcomes
Knowledge
Acquire an integrated view of the human body and identify the correlation between the major systemic diseases with more frequent morbidity and oral cavity lesion, with the intent to define adequate approaches for prevention, treatment, and follow-up of dental diseases, aimed at improving the general health of the individual. Provide the theorical basis for understanding the basic drugs used for the therapy of systemic diseases on oral health and their implications on dental procedures.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
The student must be able to demonstrate the knowledge about major systemic diseases associated with oral health and the most used drug treatments.

Syllabus
Principal knowledge about the using of the drugs: therapeutic and toxic effects. Biological variability and response to treatment. Tolerance, resistance and dependence by drugs. Pharmacokinetic an pharmacodynamics. Excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters: modulation of voltage-dependent and ligand-operated ion channels. Local anesthetics: action on voltage-dependent channels. Physiologic basics of pain. The uses of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and their effects. Drugs and cardiovascular system. Antibiotics. Electrolytic and hydro disturbs and acide-base equilibrium. Cardiogenic and septic shock. Cardiovascular disease, breathing disease, gastrointestinal disease, liver disease, anemia. Malnutrition, parenteral nutrition.
