Syllabus
Variational principles in one and several variables. Euler-Lagrange equation. Sufficient conditions for minimality. Classical examples. Absolutely continuous functions (of one variable) and the direct method of the Calculus of Variations. Geodesics. Mountain-pass theorem and minmax principle.
