Knowledge

The student who completes the course successfully will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the main issues related to microbiology and hygiene, with particular attention to the pathogenesis of infectious diseases and prevention of transmissible infectious diseases and chronic degeneration. He or she will acquire knowledge of systems and technologies of biological sample processing and subsequent analysis, and will know about epidemiological elements and the organization of the sanitary system. Lastly, he or she will be aware of modern approaches for microbiology and hygiene that rely on molecular diagnostic and biotechnologies to diagnose the microbial agent causing infectious diseases.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

In the written exam (2 hours, mutliple choice questions and open questions) the student must demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material using the appropriate terminology.

Syllabus

The course provides notions on the main microbial agents causing infectious diseases, as well as their pathogenetic mechanisms, the immune system(s) and the main microbial processes to avoid host immune responses. The course also approaches the main issues related to prevention of infectious diseases and chronic degeneration, the main elements of epidemiology and the organization of the sanitary system. He or she will be aware of the principles and methods of risk analysis and management, with particular emphasis on good practice in processing of biological samples. Lastly, some issues related to the molecular diagnostic for microbiology and hygiene are presented and discussed.
