Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who successfully completes the course will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge about the general structure of mechanisms and the related physics. The student will also be able to solve basic problems concerning: the kinematic analysis of mechanisms (computation of positions, velocities, accelerations and related topics); the dynamical analysis of mechanisms (analysis of constraints, calculation of forces, energy balance, motion law for single and multiple degrees of freedom).

Syllabus
Modelling of mechanical systems. Lower and higher kinematic pairs. Rigid body kinematics in space and plane and its application to mechanisms. Friction, wear and lubrication (limit, EHD, hydrodynamic, hydrostatic). Rigid body dynamics and its application to mechanisms: direct problem; inverse problem (single and multiple degrees of freedom; free, forced, self-excited vibrations; viscous and Coulomb damping; stability). Kinematical, dynamical analysis of mechanisms with basic synthesis: linkages and rotors; cams; gears and gear trains; belt transmissions; rolling pairs.
