Knowledge
The design of modern vehicles requires a wide range of specific expertise, related to the funtional, technological and economic prerogatives of the different vehicle subsystems, in addition to the capability of working with modern CAE tools. The student who successfully completes the course will have the theoretical and technical basis to properly setup a design procedure for the main vehicle subsystems, with particular attention to modern design tool and methodologies. This will allow him to easily join a R&D team of an automotive company.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
During the exam the student is asked to make a schematical drawing and describe one or two of the main vehicle systems (such as a given suspension, or a given gear, or a given clutch ... etc), demonstrating his/her knowledge about the design principles of that given system. During the exam the final design report (home work) is also discussed and evaluated.

Methods:

  • Final oral exam
  • Written report

Syllabus
The course covers the analysis and design of the main vahicle subsystems, such as powertrains (clutches, gearboxes, automatic transmission, differentials), suspensions, steering systems, braking systems. A basic introduction to reliability and to design methodology is also given. A practical design exercise is carried out during the course, by students organized in groups.
