Knowledge
The student who completes the course successfully will demonstrate a solid knowledge of the main infectious agents for humans (Bacteria, Fungi, Viruses ans Parasites) and of the bases of Promotion of Health and Prevention of diseases. He or she will acquire knowledge of the biology of infectious agents, the pathogentic bases of the infectious diseases and the principles of their control. He/she will know the principles of organisation of Health Services, of Basic Epidemiology and of some of the key issues of Hospital Hygiene. Lastly, he or she will be aware of modern approaches of laboratory diagnosis of infections that rely on conventional and molecular approaches and biotechnologies.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
The student will be assessed, by a written exam, on his/her ability to discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology. During the exam, the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course issues and be able to present and discuss correctly the main topics presented during the course. The student must demonstrate the ability to discuss, with critical awareness, issues relative to microbial and viral infections, main features of Epidemiological studies, techniques of prevention of the main preventable diseases. The student must demonstrate the ability to put into practice and to execute, with critical awareness, the activities illustrated or carried out under the guidance of the teacher during the course.

Syllabus
The course provides basic notions on the biology of Bacteria, Fungi, Viruses and Parasites their pathogenetic mechanisms, as well as the basic concepts of therapeutic and immunological control of infections, main determinants of communicable and non communicable diseases, their assessment through Epidemiology and main prevention techniques such as immunisation and disinfection/sterilisation. The course also approaches the laboratory diagnosis of microbial and viral infections of humans.
Bibliography
Most up-to-date textbooks of Medical Microbiology, Epidemiology and Public Health are suitable for the aim of the course; advised textbook(s) and bibliography will be indicated. Additional didactic material and recommended readings will be provided by the teacher(s).
