Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student will be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge of atomic spectrometric and hyphenated chromatographic techniques. The student will be able to design an experimental approach for trace element determination and speciation from sample preparation up to the analytical step.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
With the oral presentations and partecipation to discussion in seminars, students demonstrate to have developed the independence and critical thinking that are essential skills for an analytical chemist.

Syllabus
Atomic spectrometry and mass spectrometry for trace and ultra trace element analysis. Fundamental aspects: spectrometric techniques for trace element analysis: atomic absorption (AAS), atomic emission (OES), atomic fluorescence (AFS), mas spectrometry (ICP-MS e GC-MS), atomizers, sample introduction techniques, vapor generation techniques. Sample preparation. Mineralization by wet and dry sample treatment, at atmospheric pressure and in pressurized vessel. Applications of CVG-AAS, CVG-AFS, CVG-ICPMS e CVG-GCMS to analysis in different field: environmental, biomedical, toxicological and materials. Validation of analytical methods. Certified reference materials.
