Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who successfully completes the course will have a fundamental competence in engineering geology and essential knowledge to conduct professional activities in several fields: geotechnics, underground exploration and testing, hydrogeology, resources and materials, construction geology. His or her knowledge will be relevant in dealing with applied courses of the second cycle degree programmes.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
During the oral exam the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with propriety of expression.

Methods:

  • Final oral exam
  • Written report

Syllabus
Topics: Geotechnics and geognosy: index properties; total, neutral and effective pressure; shear strength. Laboratory tests: Atterberg’s limits; grain size; shear strength; compressive strength. Direct and indirect methods for underground exploration: seismic survey, electric survey, cross-hole and down-hole tests, dynamic and static penetration tests, drillings. Hydrogeology: hydrogeological cycle and balance; porosity and permeability; unconfined and confined aquifers; piezometric maps; salt water intrusion in coastal areas; fissured aquifers; springs; wells. Landslides: factors, causes, terminology, activity; Cruden and Varnes’ classification (fall, topple, slide, spread, flow). Landslide investigation: geological, geomorphological , geotechnical and geognostic surveys; monitoring; slope instability and factor of safety; countermeasures. Landslide risk: hazard, vulnerability and risk; assessment; protection and mitigation.
