Knowledge
Survey Research Methods Sampling is acourse for graduate students who have had a previous course in statistics.
The students who successfully complete the course will be aware of the basic terms and concepts of the field of survey research. Further, they will have the ability to apply the statistical inference to Internet and telephone surveys and to develop statistical applications within an integrated framework where the error profile of a survey is described in its components of sampling and non sampling error.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
In the oral exam the student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology.
In the written exam (3 hours, choice of 2 essay questions), the student must demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and to organise an effective and correctly written reply.
In the group essay the student must demonstrate the ability to put into practice and to execute, with critical awareness, the activities illustrated or carried out under the guidance of the teacher during the course.

Syllabus
1. Survey sampling and opinion polls.
Sample survey design: topics include the main sampling designs, as random sampling with clustering and stratification. Survey error profile as coverage, nonresponse and measurement error. Telephone and Internet surveys.
2. Analysis of the collected data
Emphasis is on proper presentation and interpretation of sampling design and on analysis of survey results. descriptive statistics, graphical methods, major issues in weighting and analysing the collected data for estimation and testing. Use of auxiliary variables in the estimation: ratio and regression estimators.
