Knowledge
The student who successfully completes the course
(1) will be aware of complex system dynamics,
(2) will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of dynamics and control systems of thermal and nuclear power plants,
(3) will have the ability to operate nuclear power plants at first as an enterprising executive and later on as a manager with an high level of autonomy and responsibility.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology and to solve problems proposed by the professor about the dynamic analysis of complex systems and the control & operation of nuclear power plants.

Syllabus
At first the course deals with the control classic theory of linear feedback systems (transfer function, Bode plots, stability criteria, sensitivity analysis, PID controllers, and so on), afterwards it deals with dynamics and the control theory of nuclear fission reactors. In addition it illustrates the control systems of thermal and nuclear power plants, PWRs and BWRs, and analyses their behaviour during operation transients. Later on it discusses the optimization of the fuel management in-core.
