Knowledge
The course is organized in two distinct but integrated modules:
1. Molecular Biology (Prof. Silvia Pellegrini)
2. Physiology (Prof. Francesca Mastorci)
The student who completes the course successfully will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the main issues related to:
molecular biology, with particular attention to the whole set of information that characterizes the postgenomic era and the role that genetic variability has on human behaviour.
Physiology, focusing on the way in which humans receive and interpret the physiological signals from the environment, both internally and externally.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
In the written exam the student must demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and to organize an effective and correctly written reply

Syllabus
1. Molecular biology. Lessons disclose basic concepts of molecular biology including the organization of the human genome, the regulation of gene expression, the concept of genetic variability and genetic risk factors. They will also introduce the latest technologies of molecular biology useful both for research and for diagnostics.
2. Physiology - Lessons concern the anatomical and physiological study of the sense organs focusing on receptors, the main biological structures involved in receiving and processing messages via the nervous system. The concepts of sensation and perception will be introduced by exploring the activation of specific areas within the nervous system and investigating the response to internal and external physiological stimuli.
Bibliography
Recommended reading includes the didactic materials available online for students. Further detailed bibliographic references will be indicated during lessons.
