Knowledge
The student who completes the course successfully will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the main issues related to:
structural and metamorphic aspects of crystalline basement;
deformation style and metamorphic evolution recorded by basement rocks in collisional margin;
role of magmas in deformation processes in the middle and upper crust:
analytical methodologies suited to investigate crystalline rocks
Assessment criteria of knowledge
During the oral exam the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with propriety of expression. With the oral presentation, to be made to the teacher and the other students, the student must demonstrate the ability to approach a circumscribed research problem, and organise an effective exposition of the data and results
Methods:
- Final oral exam
- Laboratory report
- Written report
Further information:
The final exam is based primarily on oral presentation of in-depth study of a relevant aspect among those discussed during the course 70% and written report 30%
Teaching methods
Delivery: face to face
Learning activities:
- preparation of oral/written report
- individual study
- Laboratory work
- Bibliography search
Attendance: Advised
Teaching methods:
- Lectures
- Seminar
- laboratory
Syllabus
The course provides notions on the main structural and metamorphic aspects of crystalline basement units as well as magmatic rocks in collisional and extesional tectonic setting. Main issues are:
style of deformation, progressive deformation, relation with metamorphic processes and PTt path in collisional belts;
shear zone and fluid circulation;
mode of exhumation of metamorphic units (basement nappes and core complex);
syntectonic magmatism and role of magma in deformation processes;
geological examples from western Alps and European Variscan Belt.
