Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who successfully completes the course will display knowledge of the following organizational design competencies : 1. MAIN APPROACHES OF ORGANIZATIONAL THEORY: he will able to understand how an organization's structure, technology and culture interrelate with an organization's environment (also considering its stakeholders); 2. LEVERS FOR ORGANIZATIONAL DESIGN: he will be able to identify basic principles for organizational design, to identify characteristics, strengths and weaknesses of the different types of organizational structure, to analyze their suitability in different empirical context; 3. STRATEGIES FOR ORGANIZATIONAL DESIGN: he will be able to critically assess and compare organizational design related choices in various types of organizations; to identify and solve main organizational design related problems; to contribute to a creative dialogue on organizational design issues in different contexts.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
In the written exam (2 hours, 4 execises with open and multiple choice questions), the student must demonstrate: a) his/her knowledge of the course material; his/her ability to organize an effective and corretly written replay, using the appropriate terminology; c) his/her ability to approach an organizational design problem.

Syllabus
The course aims at critical reflection on: a)why some organizational forms are more popular in some period and in some place; b)why some organizational forms are more suitable (effective and efficient) under specific situations than others; c)how strategy, technology, culture and new emerging forms and/or fashions influence what we consider as "proper" organizational design.
