Knowledge
The student who successfully completes the course will have familiarity with the elementary techniques and concepts of demographic analisis, with the major trends of population in history, particularly the demographic transition, and an overview of the current worldwide demographic landscape.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
During the exam (written with theoretical and practical questions) the student must demonstrate his/her acquired knowledge of the course materials and language.

Human population growth in history (Italy, Europe, world) and its measurement. Rates. Exponential growth and equations.
Demographic analysis. Measuring population movement. Crude rates of demographic processes. Modelling population growth. Malthusian equation.
Demographic structures. Structural factors: age, sex, civil state, space (rural-urban)
Measures of intensity of demographic processes. Exposure. Age-specific rates of demographic phenomena. Interferences between demographic phenomena and between phenomena and structures. Standardisation of crude rates. Age-period-cohort: introduction to Lexis.
Life tables analysis. Stationary populations.Fertility analysis. Measures of intensity and tempo. TFR. Reproductivity measures. Stable population model.
Population history. Ancien regime & demographic transition.
Population dynamics of infectious diseases. Diseases in the history of humans.
Human vs sustainable development.
