Syllabus
After going back to the origin and development of the capitalistic economic system, the course will be focused on the topic of the industrial revolution and the reasons why it took place in Europe and in particular in England. The aim is to make understand the historical, economic, social and cultural processes which brought about the success of ‘western’ economies, underlining their distinctive aspects and mechanisms and pointing out how at the beginning of 1900 their economic leadership moved from England to Germany and the United States, while the position of the so called’ second and late comer’ countries was changing , both in absolute and relative terms. After analyzing the development models of the prevalent countries, the study will proceed with the great transformations of 1900 up to the recent processes of economic integration which are occurring on a world scale. For this reason basic general concepts, such as growth and development, economic cycle, crisis and factory system will be analyzed again in a historical perspective.
