Conoscenze

Knowledge

The student who completes the course successfully will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of Pathogenic Infectious Agents (Viruses, Bacteria and Fungi), will be able to understand the interaction of the infectious agents with the cells, tissues, organs of the human host, the natural and induced immunological response to infection, the pathogenesis and development of disease. Based on this knowledge, the student will be able to choose competently among the available laboratory direct and indirect diagnostic assays and in principle to execute them.

Modalità di verifica delle conoscenze

Esame orale.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

The student will be assessed, by final oral exam, on his/her ability to discuss, with critical awareness, using the appropriate terminology, the subjects and issues presented in the attending lectures, and on the ability to muster the decision making process of selection of the appropriate laboratory diagnostic procedures in any specific clinical situation prospected.

Methods:

  • Final oral exam

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Metodologie e Tecniche analitiche in Microbiologia

Flora microbica locale. Classificazione generale dei miceti. Fattori di virulenza di Candida albicans. Diagnosi dei lieviti e degli ifomiceti. Come trattare il materiale biologico per la diagnosi batteriologica. Tampone faringeo, espettorato. Urinocoltura. Coprocoltura. Emocoltura. Coltura del liquor. Identificazione microbica classica e MALDI-TOF. Esame sierologico. Diagnosi di sifilide. Strumentazione nel laboratorio di Microbiologia. Tipizzazione molecolare.

Syllabus

The course provides basic knowledge of the biology, structure, morphogenesis, chemical and genetic organization, metabolism, replication, taxonomy of Viruses, Bacteria and Fungi that directly or indirectly interact with the human host (primary infection, re-infection, endogenous reactivation, by host invasion, germ proliferation or toxin production). The course will provide also knowledge of their mechanisms of pathogenesis, of the host immunological control and of the available intervention to possibly eradicate or prevent disease (anti-microbiological agents, seroprophilaxis, vaccination). Special focus will be the knowledge of the laboratory diagnostic assays (both with conventional and biomolecular approaches, manual and automated) and the evaluation of their results.

Bibliography

Attending lectures will present data with bibliography and with slides of clinical evidence and summary; this matherial, provided by the professor, with up-to-date textbooks of Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology, is suitable to prepare the student to gain the knowledge needed to complete the course successfully.

Work placement

The student that musters well the knowledge required to complete the course will have advantage in work placement as a Degree Laboratory Technician in Microbiology and Virology.
