Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who successfully completes the course will have a solid knowledge of the fundamental concepts of structural analysis (constraints, constraint reactions, internal loads, stress, strain), of the principles for solving statically determinate and indeterminate structures and of the analytical approaches for calculating the stresses in sections of beams or beamlike components, of the main static failure criteria and of the energy methods for calculating displacements. The student will be able to determine the acting loads on each component of a simple structure, define the stress state in one-dimensional components, verify their strength and calculate their displacements. He will also be able to solve simple indeterminate structures.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
The student must demonstrate the ability to approach a problem of mechanics of structures, organise an effective solution strategy putting into practice, with critical awareness, the analytical procedures illustrated by the teacher and applied during the course.

Syllabus
Statics of rigid bodies, free-body diagrams, equilibrium equations in two and three dimensions, constraints, statics of trusses, frames and machines, internal forces and moments in beams and their diagrams. Te elementary theory of linear elastic beams: stress and strain due to axial load, torsion, shear force and bending moment, generalization of the concept of stress, Mohr’s circle for plane stress, equivalent stress and static failure criteria. Calculation of displacements and solution of statically indeterminate problems using energy based methods.
