Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who successfully completes the course will have the ability to demonstrate a general knowledge of the main issues related to the applied approach of underground geology and hydrogeology, with particular attention to hydrological and hydrogeological processes, main components of the water cycle, groundwater recharge, water balance, water resource, groundwater utilization and sustainability. He or she will acquire knowledge of water flow in vadose and acquifer zones, water well drilling and groundwater extraction methods, groundwater contamination and remediation. The student will acquire knowledge of boreholes drilling and physical methods for underground exploration.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
During the oral exam the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with propriety of expression and appropriate tedrminology.

Methods:

  • Final oral exam

Syllabus
The course provides notions on applied approach of underground geology and hydrogeology. The first part of the course focuses, with particular attention, on hydrological and hydrogeological processes, main components of the water cycle (e.g., precipitation, evapotranspiration, discharge), groundwater recharge, water balance, water resource, groundwater utilization and sustainability. The course also approaches the main issues related to water flow in vadose zone and in acquifers (unconfined or confined, acquitard or acquiclude, etc.). The second part of the course focuses on water well drilling and groundwater extraction methods, boreholes drilling and physical methods (such as seismic, gravitational, magnetic, electrical and electromagnetic)for underground exploration. Lastly, some issues related to the groundwater contamination and main remediation methods are presented.
