Knowledge
The student who completes the course successfully will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the most relevant instrumental techniques for the characterization of interfaces and surfaces. In particular, the student will learn the fundamentals of Laser-Based Analytical Methods, such as Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) and micro-Raman; X-Ray and Particle beams based Analytical Methods such as X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF)and Particle-Induced X-Ray Emission (PIXE). The student will also be introduced to Mass Spectrometry, Laser-Ablation Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) and Secondary Ions Mass Spectrometry (SIMS)
Assessment criteria of knowledge
The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology.

Further information:
For the oral exam the student is requested to prepare an oral dissertation on one of the techniques treated during the course taking into account recent scientific articles from the literature.

Syllabus
The scope of the course is to provide to the student basic knowledge of the most relevant instrumental techniques for the characterization of interfaces and surfaces. In particular, Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), micro-Raman, X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Particle-Induced X-Ray Emission (PIXE). The student will also be introduced to Mass Spectrometry, Laser-Ablation Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) and Secondary Ions Mass Spectrometry (SIMS)
The student will be also introduced to modern mass spectrometric techniques as inductively coupled mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) combined with on-line systems for chemical separation (as for instance liquid chromatography). The combination of Laser ablation with ICP-MS will be also treated.
As a complement, spectroscopic techniques based on synchrotron light sources for the characterization of samples of different origin are included.
Bibliography
Reference text books on X-ray spectroscopy, electronic spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), glow discharge mass spectrometry (GDMS), secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) will be suggested. Further bibliography will be indicated.
