Lo studente acquisirà conoscenze storiche e metodologiche sul Grand Tour tra Sei e Settecento, analizzando il fenomeno particolarmente, ma non esclusivamente, in ambito inglese.
The student will learn about historical and methodological issues concerning the Grand Tour between the Seventeenth and Eighteenth century. The focus will be especially on the British on the Grand Tour, but the course will also address some of these same issues with respect to the French and other northern European nationals.
La verifica delle conoscenze avverrà attraverso due elaborati scritti e nel corso di seminari.
The course will be assessed in the course of seminars and through two long essays which the students will have to submit.

By the end of the course the student will be capable of:
Lo studente dovrà preparare un seminario e due relazioni scritte, di cui una sarà una versione estesa del seminario al fine di capire la differenza tra un testo da usare come traccia in una presentazione orale e una relazione propriamente strutturata ed annotata.
The student will produce a seminar and two written essays one of which will be an expanded version of the seminar itself, so as to grasp the difference between a text to be used in an oral presentation and a properly argued and written out essay.
Lo studente imparerà a lavorare in gruppo con altri studenti, a suddividere compiti e a compiere ricerca su fonti di diverse tipologie.
The student will learn to interact with his fellow students, to organize the group's work, as well as to use and study a variety of different types of sources.
Durante il lavoro di gruppo sono verificate le modalità di definizione delle responsabilità, di gestione e organizzazione delle fasi progettuali.
In seguito alle attività seminariali saranno richieste agli studenti due relazioni concernenti gli argomenti trattati.
The way in which teams of students will assign tasks and responsibilities, and structure each phase of their work will be carefully monitored and assessed. Seminars will be followed up by two essays on the topics presented in oral form.

Il corso è costituito da una prima parte di lezioni frontali e da una seconda parte a base seminariale in cui gruppi di studenti sono chiamati ad approfondire specifici aspetti del programma. I seminari sono preceduti da un lavoro di pianificazione congiunto tra docente e studenti, e da verifiche in corso d'opera, prima della presentazione formale.
I materiali delle lezioni frontali (power-points), così come la bibliografia dettagliata sono forniti sulla piattaforma di e-learning Moodle. Su di essa verranno poi caricati anche i seminari degli studenti con gli annessi materiali di studio (power points, bibliografie e saggi).
The course will consist of a first group of frontal lectures followed by a second part in which the students will be directly engaged in seminars which will focus on specific aspects of the course syllabus. Seminars will be preceeded by planning sessions jointly held with the tutor and iamed at identifying the core issues, allotting reading and research, as well as by sessions before the formal presentations in the course of which the tutor will verify the work progress and its coherence with the targets set.
All the teaching materials used in frontal lectures (i.e. power-points) and detailed reading lists will be uploaded on the university e-learning platform Moodle, which will also eventually contain the work produced for the students' seminars (power-points, reading materials, final essays).
Il Grand Tour tra Sei e Settecento
Il corso intende esaminare varii aspetti del Grand Tour: dalle origini come pellegrinaggio religioso, fino al viaggio di istruzione artistica e culturale durante il secolo XVIII; il particolare significato che esso assunse per l'aristocrazia britannica e per lo sviluppo di uno stile aulico nell'arte britannica. Il corso analizzerà l'impatto della cultura artistica italiana sugli aristocratici inglesi in viaggio, ma anche l'impatto esercitato dagli inglesi e dalla loro committenza sul genere del ritratto, della pittura di storia e sul paesaggio. Diari di viaggiatori, libri di conti, opere di artisti italiani e britannici associati con il Grand Tour saranno esaminati e discussi, così come saranno oggetto di analisi alcune delle mostre dedicate al Grand Tour negli ultimi decenni.
The aim of this course is to examine various aspects of the Grand Tour: its origins in religious pilgrimage; its importance as an artistic and cultural phenomenon during the 18th century; and its particular association with British aristocracy and the development of the ‘grand style’ in British art. We will focus upon the significance of Italian culture to the Englishman abroad and in particular the impact of his patronage upon portraiture and landscape painting. Relevant works and writings by Italian and British artists associated with the Grand Tour will be discussed throughout. The course will also take a critical look at some of the international exhibitions devoted to the Grand Tour in the last decades.

L'esame è sostituito dalle prove seminariali e relativi scritti che verranno valutati in trentesimi. E' pertanto obbligatoria la frequenza.
There will be no final exam; seminars and written work will be assessed and graded according to the standard grading system (30/30). Attendancy is therefore obligatory.
L'inizio delle lezioni è fissato per Lunedì 19 Settembre ore 10:15, aula G5 Polo ex Guidotti, via Trieste 31. Le lezioni si svolgono il Luneì, Martedì e Mercoledì dalle 10:15 alle 11:45 in aula G5.
