Knowledge
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- establish the main components of economic development;
- illustrate major theories of economic development;
- understand simple economic models related to the main issues in development economic.
- consider the social and political context in which development theories were created;
- explain the economic characteristics of developing countries and compare a range of perspectives on the causes and potential achievement of economic growth and poverty reduction.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
During the oral exam the student must be able to show his/her
knowledge of the course material and to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully

Syllabus
The course covers the main contemporary issues in development economics: the causes and the engine of economic growth; the long run differences among countries and the existence of convergence; the emergence of poverty traps; the role of technical progress and of education and human capital accumulation; structural change; the role of income and wealth distribution; the evolution of institutions.
Bibliography
Reading: we will adopt the Debraj Ray “Development Economics” handbook. Some specific topics come from Kaushik Basu, “Analytical Development Economics”. Further bibliography will be indicated during the course.
