Il corso si propone di fornire un'informazione di base relativa allo sviluppo delle arti visive nel medioevo.
Inoltre presenta un approfondimento relativo alla periodizzazione della scultura pisana tra XII e XIV secolo.
The course aims to provide basic information on the development of visual arts in the Middle Ages. In addition the course presents an in-depth study of the periodization of Pisan sculpture between the XII and XIV century.
The student who successfully completes the course will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the historical development of visual arts in Italy and Europe, from ca. 300 a.C. to ca. 1450 a.C.. Moreover, the student will be able to date and localize important works of art from their style, genre, and technique. Finally, the student will acquire a particular knowledge of medieval mosaics.

In the written test (one hour), the student must demonstrate to be able to recognize, date and localize, from their style, genre, and technique, six important works of medieval art, shown by slides. In the oral exam, the student will be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the historical development of medieval visual arts in Italy and Europe,and, in particular, of Italian mosaics, by discussing some examples using the appropriate terminology.

Il corso mira a dotare lo studente degli strumenti utili a collocare nello spazio e nel tempo opere e autori dell'arte medievale e ad analizzare in particolare lo sviluppo della scultura pisana tra XII e XIV secolo.
The course aims to equip the student with the necessary tools to recognize the local and chronological origin of works and authors of medieval art and to analyze in particular the development of Pisan sculpture between the XII and XIV century.

Non sono previste propedeuticità obbligatorie, ma si consiglia vivamente di affrontare, prima di questo corso, i corsi di Metodologia della Ricerca Storico-artistica e di Storia Medievale.
There is no mandatory propedeuticity, but it is strongly recommended that, before this course, the courses of Methodology of Historical-Artistic Research and Medieval History be addressed.

Servendosi di esempi tratti in prevalenza dall'ambito della scultura, il corso presenta lo sviluppo dell'arte medievale, con particolare riguardo per gli aspetti iconografici, tecnici e stilistici.
Il corso si divide in due moduli: nel primo viene trattato lo sviluppo storico generale dell'arte medievale; nel secondo viene affrontato il caso specifico dell'arte a Pisa tra XII e XIV secolo.
Using examples mainly from sculpture, the course presents the development of medieval art, with particular emphasis on iconographic, technical and stylistic aspects. The course is divided into two modules: in the first the general historical development of medieval art is presented; in the second, the specific case of art in Pisa in the XII and XIV century is addressed.
The course is divided into two parts. Part one: a general survey of the arts of the period, with various examples discussed in detail; Part two: in-depth analysis of the art of mosaic in Italy during the Romanesque period.

Esame scritto e orale. Lo scritto precede l'orale e comporta il riconoscimento di alcune importanti opere d'arte medievale. Superato lo scritto, si può accedere all'orale o nello stesso appello o in quello successivo. La parte della prova orale relativa al primo modulo del corso si svolge su immagini mute, consultabili presso la Biblioteca di Storia delle Arti del Dipartimento.
Written and oral examination. The written exam precedes the oral one and involves the recognition of some important medieval art works. After passing the written exam, you can access the oral one on the same or on the next call. For the part of the oral exam relating to the first module of the course, images without captions are used, which can be previously consulted at the Library of the History of the Arts of the Department.
Some visits to important medieval monuments in Pisa are planned to integrate the lectures.
