Knowledge
The course is organized in four distinct but integrated modules: 1. Neurometabolic correlates of cognitive functions 2. Psychodiagnostic Lab 3. Neuropsycological Lab 4. The clinical interview The student who completes the course successfully will be able to: 1. Acquire basic knowledge on the employment, study design and data analyses with modern in vivo brain functional methodologies, such as PET and fMRI; 2. perform a psychological assessment, both in the clinical field and in other typical professional contexts, and to correlate the most important theories of mind in setting up a clinical case in psychodiagnostic procedures; 3. how to set up a neuropsychological assessment and its different phases, and to acquire basic knowledge of neuropsychological tests; 4. acquire basic knowledge of the clinical interview as an instrument to teach to the patients to recognize the link between the emotional suffering and the conscious cognitive elaboration.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
In the written exams (3-4 short questions), the student must demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and to organise an effective and correctly written reply.

Methods:

  • Final written exam
  • Continuous assessment

Syllabus
The course provides notions on distinct, but integrated topics: 1. Methodological aspects to assess the neural correlates of brain functions. The course approaches the main issues related to brain functional experimental design and analysis, and to the application toward the investigation of physiological and pathological brain functioning; 2. Set up a clinical case in order to make verbal and non-verbal data psychologically treatable, in individuals, couples or families that may be presented during the first sessions. Theories of Mind and Theories of Relations in professional practice contexts; 3. Lessons will focus on different cognitive profiles of neurodegenerative disorders, show methodological aspects of neuropsychological assessment, and guide the choice of appropriate tools; 4. basic knowledge of the clinical interview as an instrument of assessment for the formulation of diagnostic and therapeutic hypothesis, methodologies for the meta-cognitive interview.
Bibliography
Recommended reading includes the didactic materials available online for students, and the following works: -Gazzaniga, Ivry, Mangun. Neuroscienze Cognitive. Work placement
Hands-on sessions will be set up for brain functional data analyses. Observation of videos with simulations of clinical cases related to the above theories. As far as responsibility and autonomy are concerned, the student will be able to show these competences in a direct or indirect supervision context.
