Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who successfully completes the course will have a deep knowledge of the most common and used bioinformatics tools with a particular emphasis on those used to handle, store and analyze Next Generation Sequencing data. The knowledge gained after successfully completing the course will range from a solid understanding of the theoretical bases and principles behind the algorithms used to a convincing "hands on experience" on real data.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
The assessment will be mostly aimed at evaluating the ability of the student to critically figure out the correct bioinformatics strategy to address real problems in functional and comparative genomics

Methods:

  • Final written exam

Further information:
The exam will consist of 5-7 multiple choice questions (MCQ) and 2 or 3 open questions (OQ). MCQ: 50% of final score, OQ: 50% of final score

Teaching methods

Delivery: face to face

Learning activities:

  • attending lectures
  • individual study
  • Laboratory work
  • Bibliography search
  • Practical

Attendance: Advised

Teaching methods:

  • Lectures
  • laboratory

Syllabus
The course will mostly deal with the problematic of genome sequencing in the next generation sequencing era. It will include an in depth study of the techniques, of the bioinformatics tools and of the general alghoritms used to de novo sequence an and succesfully assemble an eukaryote genome. A particular attention will be paid to assess the quality of the final assembly, to annotate it and to carry out comparative genomics analyses. The course will also address the general topics involved in RNA-seq experiments and will give an overview of the most common phylogenetic analyses
