Knowledge
The course aims to familiarize students with the basic knowledge of organic chemistry, with particular attention to those which are essential to the understanding of biological processes. The student who completes the course successfully will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the structure and reactivity of the main classes of organic compounds. He/she will also be able to predict the chemical behavior of simple organic compounds, and suggest reaction mechanisms can explain the reactivity. Moreover, the student will also be able to assign the correct IUPAC name to organic compounds, and understand the implications of the organic stereochemistry.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
In the written exam (2 hours, choice of 7-9 essay questions), the student must demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and to organise an effective and correctly written reply. During the oral exam, the student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology.

Methods:

  • Final oral exam
  • Final written exam

Further information:
Final written exam is mandatory. An oral examination may be requested by the student who has obtained in the final written exam a vote equal to or greater than 16/30

Teaching methods

Delivery: face to face

Learning activities:

  • attending lectures
  • participation in discussions
  • individual study
  • group work

  • Task-based learning/problem-based learning/inquiry-based learning

Syllabus
The study of organic compounds is addressed by examining the structure and reactivity of functional groups present in these compounds. The knowledge gained is used to rationalize the characteristics and reactivity of selected classes of organic molecules. The topics addressed include: the structure and reactions of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alkyl halides, alcohols, ethers, epoxides, aromatic molecules, aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acids and their derivatives, amines; the nomenclature of organic compounds; the stereochemistry; the acidity and basicity of organic compounds; reaction mechanisms; the structural characteristics and a brief introduction to the chemistry of carbohydrates, lipids and amino acids.
