Knowledge
Students are expected to acquire the knowledge on: - the energetic and fluid machines in general - renewable energies (geothermal, wind, solar) - the principal thermodynamic cycles and their applications to the real plants - steam generators, condensers, regenerators - the fundamentals of the reciprocating engines and more in detail of the combustion, charge substitution and polluting emissions - the work exchange between fluid and turbomachines - the basics on steam and gas turbines and combined cycles - the basics on hydraulic turbines
Assessment criteria of knowledge
- The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology. - During the oral exam the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with propriety of expression. - The student must demonstrate the ability to put into practice and to execute, with critical awareness, the activities illustrated or carried out under the guidance of the teacher during the course. - With the oral presentation, to be made to the teacher, the student must demonstrate the ability to approach a circumscribed design problem, and organise an effective exposition of the results.

Syllabus
The course start on a general survey on the availability and utilization of the main sources of energy, both conventional and renewable. The exchange of work between fluid and turbomachines is presented as basic argument of the course. After a recall on the main thermodynamic cycles, the application to the real plants and the modification to the cycles for the optimization of the efficiency are shown. The main apparatus of the steam power plants are shown, such as steam generators, the condenser and regenerator. Steam turbines are widely treated as well. The course treats the basics of the reciprocating engines with a particulr attention to the fluid dynamic and gas dynamic of the charge susbstitution process, optimization of the combustion process by means of the turbulent motion and control of the polluting emissions. Gas turbines are treated together with their placement inside a combined cycle. Finally, hydraulic turbines are presented.
Bibliography
The students are recommended to prepare themselves on the most known books regarding the matter "Macchine" (Fluid Machines). The students may refer to a book published by the lecturers ("Elementi di Macchine", ed. ETS Pisa).
