Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who completes the course successfully will be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge of scientific vocabulary, grammar rules and communicative strategies related to the nursing profession. He/she will be able to read/ analyse scientific articles and reflect on nursing reasearch investigation. Lastly, he/she will become aware of the strategies related to patient-oriented communication.The overall aim will be a holistic approach to patient care.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
The student will be assessed on his/her ability to show a good command of the main course contents. During the written exam (two hours),the student must demonstrate his/her ability to put into practice the activities carried out in class. Patient-oriented communication strategies will be also taken assessed.

Further information:
The evaluation will be based on a multiple choice test of grammar use, scientific reading comprehension and scientific vocabulary knowledge. Class participation will be also taken into consideration.

Syllabus
The course covers the objectives of the B1 Level( Common European Framework) of the English Language. Particular attention will be given to scientific vocabulary related to the nursing profession, such as the National Health Service; Illnesses; Nursing Care; Medical Terms; Things in the Ward;The Human Body; The Body Systems. A part of the course will be also dedicated to patient-oriented communication and reflective and critical writings as part of a professional portfolio. Lastly, scientific articles related to the nursing profession will be analysed and debated in plenary.

Recommended reading includes the following works: Cambridge English for Nursing (Intermediate+) Good Practice Communication Skills in English for the Mediacl Practitioner Professional English Medical Grammar in Use(Murphy) Further bibliography and handouts will be given.
