Knowledge
The student who successfully completes the course will be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge of the structural and physiologic characteristics of the microorganisms, with special regards to human pathogens, and the study of the mechanisms of the infectious diseases. In addition, aim of the course is to provide the students with a good knowledge of the mechanisms of action of the most common antibacterial and antiviral drugs and the modalities by which infectious agents develop resistance to them.
The student will also have advanced knowledge of the primary risk factors and conditions that contribute to the development of chronic diseases. He/she will acquire the principles of infectious disease prevention and control in community or in healthcare facilities. In addition, the student will have knowledge on strategies for health promotion including the cultural, social and behavioral determinants of disease and epidemiological methods used in the study of communicable diseases.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
The student will be assessed on his/her ability to discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology. During the oral exam, the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the main topics of the course and the ability to discuss, with critical awareness, issues relative to infectious agents, epidemiology, pathogenesis, laboratory diagnosis of the infectious diseases, and measures to prevent them.

Syllabus
Microbiology: The first part of the course deals with the classification criteria, morphology and physiology of various medically important infectious agents and understanding host-parasite interactions. The second part of the course focuses on the virulence factors of infectious agents (i.e. bacteria, virus, fungi) and how they cause diseases. The course will also provide the principles of laboratory diagnosis, prevention and therapy of important infectious diseases (e.g. tuberculosis, meningitis, AIDS, etc)
Hygiene: The course deals with general organization of the Health System in Italy and its structures and responsibility at local, regional and national levels, with general determinants of health and means to quantify health in populations. The more specific aspects of hygiene from infective and chronic-degenerative disease epidemiology to the measures to reduce disease burden in populations, with an attention to disinfection/sterilization and vaccination will be dealt with.
