Knowledge
The student who successfully completes the course will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of fundamental pathological processes obtained through the study of the causes of diseases, their pathological effects and the molecular mechanisms by which these effects are produced, including oncologic alterations. He or she will acquire advanced knowledge of the body's defensive and adaptive mechanisms aimed at restoring physiological homeostasis at the levels of cells, tissues, organs and systems, with particular regard to the oral cavity and dental apparatus. Moreover, he or she will be deeply aware of the basic mechanisms of immunological response and discuss with ease about their intervention in pathological situations. Finally, the student will learn fundamental aspects of clinical oncology and related therapeutics mainly referring to the facial and oral district.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
During the oral exam, the student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology.
Methods:
- Final oral exam
- Periodic Quizzes/multiple choice
Further information:
Final oral exam 100%
Teaching methods
Delivery: face to face

Syllabus
The course provides a comprehensive approach to cellular and molecular immunology as well as to the basic mechanisms of disease, including tumours. Main issues of the course: Causes of disease. Cellular responses to stress and toxic insults: adaptation, injury and death. Acute and chronic inflammation. Tissue renewal, regeneration and repair. Neoplastic pathology (causes, mechanisms, molecular biology effects of tumour development; clinical aspects and principles of therapy). Genetic pathology. Environmental pathology. Natural and adaptive immunity; antigens and antibodies; antigen processing and presentation; T lymphocyte receptors and accessory molecules; maturation, activation and regulation of T and B lymphocytes; activation and function of complement; immunological tolerance; effector mechanisms of humoral and cell-mediated immunity. Immunopathology: hypersensitivity, auto-immune diseases; immunologic response during tumour development; graft rejection; immuno-deficiencies.
