The student who completes the course successfully will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the main issues related to the methods for the formation of carbon-carbon simple bonds through transmetallation-based cross-coupling reactions mediated by transition metals, and also via procedures that involve the ractions of C-H bonds . He or she will acquire a knowledge of the main catalytic systems, solvents and reactions partners, pros and cons of every procedures, and will be able to analyze and correlate their principles. Lastly, he or she will be able to recognize difficulties and solutions for the scale-up of a catalyzed reaction.
During the oral exam the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with propriety of expression. With the oral presentation, which is part of the exam and concerns the elaboration of one or more synthetic pathways towards a molecule whose structure is assigned ten days before the oral examination, the student must demonstrate the ability to approach a circumscribed research problem, and organise an effective exposition of the results.

The main goal of this course is to show the most recent protocols for the synthesis, from lab-scale to industrial-scale, of relevant classes of organic compounds including biologically-active derivatives, agrochemicals and new materials. Among these protocols, main enphasis will be given to the metal-mediated carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bond formation reactions, starting from the classical procedures involving organometallic derivatives to the most innovative, such as carbon-hydrogen or carbon-heteroatom activation reactions. Practical and mechanistic aspects of the examined synthetic protocols will be critically discussed.
Recommended reading includes powerpoint slides prepared by the teacher, and distributed to the students. Further bibliography is reported in the slides indicated above.
