Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who successfully completes the course will be expected to acquire: - some knowledge concerning the main characteristics of family business in terms of strategy; - the role of family members and their behaviour towars family firms; - some knowledge concerning the role of boards of directors in family firms, its main characteristics, its possible structure and role; - relevance and importance of handmade production and international strategy. The student will be aware of the main problems and difficulties encountered by the family business owner and he or she will be able to suggest possible concrete solutions.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
The student must demonstrate the ability to put into practice and to execute, with critical awareness, the activities illustrated or carried out under the guidance of the teacher during the course.

Case studies will be evaluated and their marks will be included in final evaluation (25%).

Syllabus
The course provides notions on the main characteristics of family business, starting from the various definitions and analysing the relationship between family and firm. The course also approaches the main issues related to corporate governance, with particular emphasis on the role of boards of the director and their relationship with family members. Then the course deals with generational shift in family business, analysing this process from different points of view and studying some possible solutions to it. During the course, students will have the chance to meet owners and founders of family business and they will be asked to work out a case study, choosing a family business that they know.
