Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who completes the course successfully will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of descriptive and experimental embryology as well as of the molecular mechanisms underlying embryo development. He or she will be aware of the techniques and strategies used in the main invetebrate and vertebrate developmental model systems. Furthermore, the student will learn to design appropriate strategies to approach specific problems in developmental biology.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology. During the oral exam the student must also demonstrate the ability to approach a circumscribed research problem describing the appropriate techniques/strategies to be used.

Methods:

  • Final oral exam

Teaching methods

Delivery: face to face

Learning activities:

  • attending lectures

Attendance: Advised

Teaching methods:

  • Lectures

Syllabus
The first part of the course provides notion on the developmental strategies used in selected vertebrates and invertebrates. Particular attention is also dedicated to the experiments that led to the understanding of how cell fates and the main body axes are specified. The second part of the course deals with the molecular mechanisms that control embryo development and that explain, at the molecular level, the results obtained by experimental embryologists. This part also focuses on approaches available in distinct animal models.
