Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who completes the course successfully will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the main issues related to corrosion damaging of metallic materials in natural and industrial environments, both in presence of a condensate phase (wet corrosion)and at high temperatures (high temperature corrosion). Moreover, he or she will acquire knowledge of methods available for protection of materials and will be aware of modern approach for materials selection, testing and design criteria.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
During the oral exam the student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with propriety of expression.

Methods:

  • Final oral exam

Teaching methods

Delivery: face to face

Learning activities:

  • attending lectures

Attendance: Advised

Teaching methods:

  • Lectures

Syllabus
The course provide notions on thermodinamics and kinetics of corrosion processes, as well as the description of uniform and localized damage of metallic materials, such as, pitting c., crevice c., galvanic c.,mechanically Assisted c. (stress corrosion cracking, corrosion-fatigue, fretting c., hydrogen-induced cracking) and velocity-induced corrosion (erosion-corrosion, cavitation. The course also approach the main issue related to corrosion by water, atmospheric c., c. in soils and Microbiologically induced c.. The second part of the course focuses on methods available to evaluate c. resistance and protect materials againg c. damaging, such as protective coatings, cathodic and anodic protection, inhibitors. Lastly, several real cases of c. damaging are presented, in order to show criteria and methods to carry out failure analyses on mechanical components.
