Definition of the molecular weights, degree of polymerization. Polydispersity index. Methods for the determination of molecular weights. (SEC and GPC).The synthesis of macromolecules: step-wise and chain polymerizations. The free radical polymerization: initiation, propagation, termination, transfer, kinetics. Radical copolymerization. Kinetic scheme. Reactivity ratios. Mayo-Lewis equation. The ionic polymerization: the initiators, monomers, solvents. The ionic coordinated polymerization, Ziegler-Natta catalysts and metallocenes mechanism. The amorphous and semi-crystalline polymers. Tg and Tm. Structure-property relationships: molecular parameters that determine the value of Tg for a polymer. The crystallinity in the polymeric materials: ordered structures, crystalline cells, the lamellar crystals, the spherulites. Melting thermodynamics, enthalpy and entropy factors. Viscoelastic behavior of polymeric materials. Processing of polymers: thermoplastics, thermosets, composites.
