Knowledge

The purpose of this course is to give students:

• An understanding of what database systems are, why we use them, and how to use common database systems efficiently, and

• An understanding of how statistical models are used to analyze data as predictive instruments, and as tools for inference.

Syllabus

The module is an introduction to the basis concepts of informatics. It provides the student with a comprehensive introduction to the use of database management systems for applications. We will cover the relational model, relational algebra, and SQL. We will also learn about simple techniques for data analysis. A variety of other key database topics are also covered. Simple but illustrative examples will explain the application in practice of the techniques presented in the module.
