Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who successfully completes the course will have the ability to establish and maintain sports, recreational and functional turfs. He/She will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the turfgrass species, the materials and the construction systems for sports surfaces. The student will be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge also on turf maintenance. He/She will be aware of the main turf pests and their control
Assessment criteria of knowledge
In a two-step exam, the student will be assessed on the ability to discuss the course content using the appropriate terminology. In the practical exam the student is asked to identify the main species by directly observing samples of plant material (leaves, inflorescences, seeds, etc). In the written exam (3 hours) the student is asked to answer a questionnaire conceived to demonstrate the ability to approach problems concerning the turf construction and maintenance

Syllabus
The general part of the course deals with the morphology and physiology of turfgrasses, establishment methods, construction systems and materials used. Particular emphasis is given to themes such as moving, fertilization, irrigation, aerification and topdressing. A specific section of the course is dedicated to artificial turfs and hybrid systems. The practical part of the course deals with the construction and maintenance of golf courses, football pitches and horse race tracks and includes technical visits to relevant sport facilities
