Una città tra Mediterraneo ed Europa. Dalla Palermo islamica alla Palermo aragonese.
Il corso analizzerà, in un confronto puntuale con le fonti e la storiografia, la storia economica, sociale e materiale della città, inserendola nel quadro delle trasformazioni che investirono la Sicilia e il Mediterraneo dal X al XV secolo.
Between Mediterranean and Europe: medieval Palermo from Islam to the Aragonese age.
The course will analyze sources and historiography related to economic, social and material history of the city inserting it within the framework of the changes that affected Sicily and Mediterranean from 10th to 15th century.
Lectures and seminars will deal with the structure and transformations of the urban settlement; the demographic evolution and the characteristics of the city population; the relationships between the city, the regional society and the Mediterranean and European spaces; the institutional and political structures of urban society.
Gli studenti dovranno dimostrare: a) di avere acquisito una conoscenza sicura della struttura sociale e dei processi di trasformazione in atto in Sicilia e a Palermo nei secoli X-XV; b) di sapere contestualizzare le specificità della storia cittadina e isolana nel più generale quadro euromediterraneo; c) di avere acquisito la capacità di comprendere, interpretare ed esporre criticamente la letteratura storiografica, i documenti e i testi presentati e discussi durante il corso e quelli oggetto della eventuale esercitazione seminariale.
Students will have to demonstrate: a) to have acquired a secure knowledge of the social structure and of the transformation processes taking place in Sicily and Palermo in the X-XV centuries; b) to know how to contextualize the specificities of city and island history in the more general Euro-Mediterranean framework; c) to have acquired the ability to understand, interpret and critically expose the historiographical literature, the documents and texts presented and discussed during the course.
E' presupposta la conoscenza della storia generale dell'età medievale.
Institutions of Medieval History; Latin; familiarity with at least one of the main modern languages.
Il corso tratterà la struttura e le trasformazioni dell'insediamento urbano; l'evoluzione demografica e i caratteri della popolazione cittadina; le relazioni tra la città, la società regionale e gli spazi mediterranei ed europei; gli assetti istituzionali e politici della società urbana.
Examinations program and texts will be agreed with each of the attending students within a wider bibliography, studies, sources and discussion materials presented during the course.
Final oral exam on the agreed program.
Attending students can take a significant part of the exam through the preparation of a seminar, discussed in the classroom and accompanied by a written report.

Parte dela prova finale potrà essere sostenuta nella forma di esercitazione seminariale e scritta.

Prova orale finale sul programma concordato. Gli studenti frequentanti potranno sostenere parte rilevante dell'esame attraverso la preparazione di un seminario, discusso in aula e accompagnato da una relazione scritta.
