Lo studente potrà acquisire conoscenze in un’area fondamentale del pensiero politico antico, quale è la riflessione politica di Platone nella Repubblica.
Students will be able to acquire knowledge in a crucial area of ancient political thought, namely Plato's reflection in the Republic.
La verifica avrà luogo mediante la valutazione di una relazione su un tema specifico attinente all’argomento del corso, da presentare in forma orale (seminario durante lo svolgimento del corso) o in forma scritta (elaborato da consegnare al docente almeno quindici giorni prima dell’esame orale); in ogni caso da completarsi in sede d’esame con un’interrogazione orale sull’intera tematica del corso.
The evaluation will take place through the assessment of a report on a specific topic pertaining to the subject of the course in the form of either an oral presentation (a seminar held during the course) or a written report (to be submitted to the teacher at least fifteen days before the oral exam); in either case the report will be integrated at the time of the exam by oral questions covering the whole subject of the course.
Lo studente dovrà acquisire la capacità di esaminare con intelligenza critica il testo e i temi trattati nel corso, inquadrandoli correttamente nel loro contesto storico-filosofico.
Students are expected to acquire the skill of critically examining the texts and topics explored during the course, and of correctly framing them within their historical-philosophical context.
La verifica delle capacità avrà luogo mediante le modalità impiegate per accertare l’acquisizione delle conoscenze.
The evaluation of skills will be based on the same method used to assess learning.
Lo studente potrà acquisire e sviluppare non solo accuratezza e precisione nella lettura e valutazione delle posizioni sostenute nel testo che verrà letto e commentato in classe, ma anche attitudine all’uso critico di un testo classico nel dibattito su problematiche contemporanee.
Students will be able to acquire and develop not just accuracy in the interpretation and assessment of the views presented in the texts read and discussed in class, but also a critical approach to the use of Classical texts in the debate on contemporary issues.

Active engagement by the students will constantly be encouraged during the taught lectures and seminars alike.

Ad una prima fase del corso, basata su lezioni frontali del docente, seguiranno i seminari degli studenti frequentanti. Principale strumento di supporto sarà il testo platonico, la cui lettura dovrà appoggiarsi alla conoscenza delle posizioni interpretative sostenute nei saggi previsti in bibliografia. Ulteriore materiale didattico potrà essere fornito durante le lezioni. Riferimenti al testo originale saranno resi comprensibili anche a chi non abbia conoscenza del greco antico.
The first stage of the course, based on taught lectures, will be followed by seminars held by the students attending the course. The main resource will be Plato's text, which is expected to be read in the light of the interpretations expounded in the recommended secondary literature. Further teaching material may be provided during the lectures. References to the original texts will be made understandable even to students who do not know ancient Greek.
Mutamento e decadenza della polis nella Repubblica di Platone
Il corso indaga le nozioni di cambiamento e degenerazione delle forme di governo nel quadro delle interazioni tra ordine morale-psicologico e assetto sociale-politico, tracciato nella Repubblica di Platone. Dopo una prima riflessione introduttiva sulle nozioni di mutamento e stabilità nel pensiero platonico, sarà analizzato il ruolo che gioca il cambiamento culturale, sociale e politico nello sviluppo e nella decadenza della città ideale. Si prenderà in esame, in particolare, il passaggio da un assetto politico ad un altro, attraverso l’analisi del libro VIII e parte del IX, nei quali è tracciata una fenomenologia delle forme costituzionali, secondo lo schema di un progressivo allontanamento dalla forma migliore di governo. Particolare attenzione sarà dedicata ad alcune questioni centrali nell’analisi platonica del mutamento politico, quali il rapporto con i cambiamenti in ambito culturale, morale e psicologico, gli effetti socio-politici delle trasformazioni interne al gruppo dirigente, la relazione tra il progetto di una città ideale e i processi cui sono soggette le forme politiche nella dimensione temporale della storia umana.
The transformation and decay of the polis in Plato's Republic
The course explores the notion of the transformation and degeneration of forms of government within the framework of the interaction between moral-psychological and socio-political order, as outlined in Plato's Republic. After some introductory considerations on the notions of change and stability in Platonic thought, we will be analysing the role played by cultural, social and political change in the development and decay of the ideal city. In particular, we will be examining the passage from one polity to another through an analysis of Book 8 and part of Book 9, which trace a phenomenology of political constitutions, according to a scheme positing a progressive departure from the best form of government. Particular attention will be devoted to certain key questions related to Plato's analysis of political change, such as its relation to cultural, moral and psychological changes, the socio-political consequences of the transformation of the ruling class, and the relation between the project of an ideal city and the processes that political forms have undergone in human history.
