Lo studente potrà acquisire conoscenze riguardanti un testo classico del pensiero filosofico antico, comprendendone il lessico, le tesi e le strategie argomentative, e inquadrandolo nel suo contesto storico-filosofico.
Students will become familiar with an ancient philosophical text, by understanding its terminology, doctrines and argumentative strategies, and framing it within its historical-philosophical context.
La verifica finale avrà luogo mediante un esame orale alla fine del corso.
The evaluation will take place through an oral exam at the end of the course.

Students are expected to acquire the skill of critically examining the texts and topics explored during the course, and of correctly framing them within their historical-philosophical context
La verifica delle capacità avrà luogo mediante le modalità impiegate per accertare l’acquisizione delle conoscenze.
The evaluation of skills will be based on the same method used to assess learning.
Lo studente potrà acquisire e sviluppare non solo accuratezza e precisione nella lettura e valutazione delle posizioni sostenute nel testo che verrà letto e commentato in classe, ma anche attitudine all’uso critico di un testo classico nel dibattito su problematiche contemporanee.
Students will be able to acquire and develop not just accuracy in the interpretation and assessment of the views presented in the texts read and discussed in class, but also a critical approach to the use of Classical texts in the debate on contemporary issues.

Non è richiesta la conoscenza del greco antico. È presupposta una conoscenza generale della filosofia antica.
Knowledge of ancient Greek is not required. General knowledge of ancient philosophy is expected.
Il corso è basato su lezioni frontali del docente, durante le quali sarà letto e commentato il testo aristotelico in programma. Riferimenti al testo originale saranno resi comprensibili anche a chi non abbia conoscenza del greco antico. Ulteriore materiale didattico potrà essere fornito durante le lezioni.
The course is based on taught lectures, devoted to reading and discussing Aristotle’s text. References to the original text will be made understandable even to students who do not know ancient Greek. Further teaching material may be provided during the lectures.
Il primo libro della Politica di Aristotele
Il corso consisterà nella lettura e nell’analisi del primo libro della Politica di Aristotele, un testo nel quale trovano espressione alcune famose posizioni aristoteliche al crocevia tra ambito politico, etico e antropologico: dalla celebre definizione dell’uomo come “animale politico” alla legittimità della schiavitù. Ad una prima parte introduttiva, dedicata a illustrare la struttura della Politica nel suo complesso e i principali temi del pensiero politico aristotelico, seguiranno le lezioni dedicate alla lettura integrale di Politica 1 e alla discussione delle principali questioni che il libro solleva. Particolare attenzione sarà rivolta ad alcuni temi e nozioni centrali nella trattazione, come il ruolo sociale e politico della donna e dello schiavo, le nozioni di comunità, famiglia e proprietà, e il nesso tra virtù e rapporti gerarchici all’interno della famiglia e della società. Nel corso dell’analisi saranno introdotti confronti con altre opere aristoteliche (ad es. l’Etica Nicomachea) e con altre prospettive nell’ambito del pensiero antico (in particolare quella platonica).
The first book of Aristotle’s Politics
The course examines the first book of the Politics, where Aristotle sets out some famous views at the crossroads between politics, ethics and anthropology: for example, the definition of man as “political animal” and the legitimacy of slavery. After an introduction, devoted to illustrating the structure of the Politics as a whole and the main topics of Aristotle’s political thought, the course will focus on the reading of Politics 1 and the discussion of the chief questions that it raises. In particular, we will be analysing some key topics and notions, such as the social and political role of women and slaves, the notions of community, family and property, and the link between virtue and hierarchical relationships within family and society. Relevant comparisons with other works of Aristotle (e.g. the Nicomachean Ethics) and with other ancient philosophical views (e.g. Plato’s view) will be introduced.

Given the features of the course, attendance is highly recommended. Students who are not able to attend are required to get in touch with the lecturer at least two months before the oral exam.
Esame orale, durante il quale lo studente dovrà leggere e commentare parti del testo aristotelico e rispondere ad alcune domande sugli studi in programma.
Oral exam: students must read and discuss parts of Aristotle’s text, and answer some questions on the essays included in the bibliography.
