Conoscenze

Al termine del corso lo studente:

-avrà appreso i criteri di scelta dei prodotti e dei processi più moderni e vantaggiosi per la produzione di tecnopolimeri e super-tecnopolimeri;

- avrà appreso i criteri di scelta dei materiali polimerici e dei processi più moderni per lo sviluppo di dispositivi biomedici da impiegare in medicina rigenerativa e rilascio controllato e mirato di principi attivi;

-saprà definire correlazioni struttura-proprietà dei polimeri industriali in riferimento alle loro prestazioni in settori applicativi ad alto contenuto tecnologico;

-avrà appreso le problematiche connesse con la produzione sostenibile su scala industriale e il suo impatto socio-economico e ambientale.

Knowledge

The student who successfully completes the course will:

-know criteria for selection of more actual and profitable products and processes for the preparation preparation of engineering plastics and high performance polymers;

- know criteria for selection of more actual and profitable polymers and processes for the development of biomedical devices for regenerative medicine and drug delivery applications;-

-be able to define structure-property-application relationships for polymers in various high-tech fields;

-the current problems associated with sustainable industrial production and its social-economical and environmental impact.

Le conoscenze saranno valutate in base all’abilità dello studente di discutere criticamente i contenuti del corso e di applicare concetti generali a diversi contesti nella tecnologia dei materiali polimeri.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss critically the main course contents using the appropriate terminology and to apply general concepts to different specific topics of polymeric materials technology.

Al termine del corso lo studente sarà in grado di:

-svolgere una ricerca delle fonti e di applicarle a contesti tecnologici industriali;

-presentare una relazione scritta su un particolare argomento assegnato di polimeri tecnologici;

-discutere un particolare argomento assegnato di polimeri tecnologici in una relazione orale.

Skills

The student who successfully completes the course will be able to:

-perform a search of resources and apply them to industrial technological contexts;

-present a written report on a special assigned topic on high performance polymers;

-present an oral report on a special assigned topic on high performance polymers.

Lo studente dovrà preparare e discutere una presentazione orale sull’attività svolta durante il corso.

Modalità di verifica dei comportamenti

Durante il corso sarà verificato il grado di sensibilità alle tematiche dello studente mediante esemplificazione di 'casi di studio' specifici.

Assessment criteria of behaviors

During the course the level of student's awareness will be assessed by exemplifying 'case studies'.

Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Sono richieste buone conoscenze della chimica macromolecolare. All'inizio del corso saranno comunque forniti gli elementi essenziali per la comprensione dei principali concetti di chimica macromolecolare necessari per il corso.

Sono inoltre richieste conoscenze di base di chimica industriale, termodinamica classica, chimica organica, chimica analitica e chimica inorganica.

Prerequisites

Good knowledge of polymer science is required. At the beginning of the course the necessary fundamental principles will anyhow be provided for a successful benefit from the course.

Knowledge is also required of basic principles of industrial chemistry, classical thermodynamics, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry and inorganic chemistry.

In addition to normal teaching activities, the teacher meets the students  by appointment and uses e-mail to communicate with them.

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Il corso intende fornire un'ampia comprensione della moderna chimica macromolecolare industriale dei tecnopolimeri,  dei super-tecnopolimeri e di polimeri biodegradabili e biocompatibili, con riferimento alla preparazione industriale, caratterizzazione, applicazione e riciclo. Si studieranno anche alcuni aspetti catalitici e meccanicistici della sintesi dei polimeri e del loro ciclo di vita. Inoltre particolare attenzione sarà dedicata all'analisi delle proprietà fisico-chimiche e meccaniche in vista dei possibili impieghi.

Verranno presentati i più importanti campi di applicazione su larga scala e in settori di nicchia e si discuteranno le prestazioni dei tecnopolimeri e dei super-tecnopolimeri.

Syllabus

The course aims at providing a wide understanding of modern industrial chemistry of engineering plastics, high performance polymers and biodegradable and biocompatibile polymers, with respect to industrial preparation, characterization, application and recycle. Interest will be placed on the catalytic and mechanistic aspects of the synthesis and life cycle of polymers. Special attention will also be devoted to analyzing the main physical-chemical and mechanical properties, in view of possible uses.

The more important fields of large scale and niche applications will be presented and the performance of engineering plastics and high performance, high-tech polymers will be discussed.

Introduction to polymeric materials: commodities and specialties. High performance polymers. Industrial production of polymers: practical applications, trends, perspectives. Resume of basic concepts in organic chemistry relevant to polymeric materials of interest.

Step-wise polymerization for industrial preparation of polymers and its significance to high performance polymers: mechanism and kinetics of polymerization, dependence of molecular weight on stoichiometric ratio of reactants and conversion, statistics of molecular weights and degrees of polymerization.

Polyamides: general aspects and importance. PA6 and PA6,6. Brief description of industrial processes to precursors: caprolactam, adipic acid, hexamethylenediamine (via electrohydrodimerization). VK process plant for PA6. Degradation and stabilization of polyamides: examples of antioxidants and UV stabilizers. PA11 from renewable resources. Industrial special applications of polyamides. Piezoelectricity of polyamides. Nanocomposites with nanofiller clays and CNTs. Aramids: general aspects and importance. Kevlar and Nomex. Brief description of industrial processes to precursors: terephthalic and isophthalic acids. Lyotropic solutions and dry-jet wet spinning process. Mention to shear-thinning and shear-tickening of polymer melts and polymer solutions. LOI and flame retardancy. Industrial special applications of aramids.

Polyimides: general aspects and importance. Industrial preparations of polyimides via polyamic acid: synthetic features of importance. Kapton and Upilex. Synthetic scheme for PMR15. Mention to thermoplastic polyimides. Industrial special applications of polyimides. Polybenzimidazoles: general aspects and importance. Industrial special applications of PBI.

Polyesters: general aspects and importance. Brief description of industrial processes to precursors: ethylene glycol, dimethyl terephthalate, cyclohexanedimethanol. Melt phase polymerization for PET. Mention to PBT and PCT. Melt phase crystallization: nucleation and growth, equation of Avrami-Evans, dependence of crystallization rate on temperature. Permeability. Industrial special applications of polyesters. Thermotropic polyesters: general aspects and importance. Brief description of industrial processes to precursors: hydroxybenzoic and hydroxynaphthoic acids. Vectra and Xydar. Industrial special applications of thermotropic polyesters.

Polycarbonates: general aspects and importance. Brief description of industrial processes to precursors: bisphenol A and diphenyl carbonate. Melt phase polytransesterification and interfacial polycondensation for PC. Mention to other bisphenols for modification of properties. Synergistic blends of PC with ABS and with PBT. Industrial special applications of polycarbonates.

Polyurethanes: general aspects and importance. Mention to more common industrial diisocyanates: TDI, MDI, HDI. Mention to polyether polyols. Reactions of isocyanates with water, amines, urethanes. Toxicity and environmental problems with isocyanates. Flexible foams and rigid foams: formulations and reactivity, foaming agents. Thermal conductivity. Industrial special applications of polyurethanes.

The more highly ranked high performance polymers: PBO, PBTz, PESU, PPO, PPS, PEEK. General aspects and importance. Brief description of the industrial processes for the polymers. Reinforcement with fillers. Industrial special applications of these high performance polymers.

Biomedical Polymers of synthetic and natural origin. Stimuli-responsive biomedical polymers; Mechanism of biodegradation and bioerosion; processing of biomedical polymers for the development of micro/nanostructured devices for regenerative medicine  and drug delivery applications.Additive manufatcturing of biomedical polymers. Characterization of micro/nanostructured polymeric devices. 

Bibliografia e materiale didattico

Libri di testo, capitoli di enciclopedie e materiale bibliografico vario saranno consigliati allo studente. Le diapositive delle lezioni frontali saranno messe a disposizione dello studente.

Bibliography

Textbooks, chapters in encyclopedias and further reference material will be recommended on individual topics. The slides of face-to-face classes will be made available.

Modalità d'esame

L'esame consiste in una prova orale.

Tale prova orale della durata media di 30-40 minuti tra lo studente e il docente riguarda i contenuti del corso e serve a valutare il grado di apprendimento, in particolare la capacità di elaborare criticamente e autonomamente i principali concetti applicandoli ai diversi contesti tecnologici proposti allo studente.

Il colloquio avrà esito positivo se lo studente dimostrerà di essere in grado di esprimersi in modo chiaro e di usare la terminologia scientifica corretta e se risponderà correttamente alle domande concernenti i principali concetti del corso.

Assessment methods

An oral examination will be the assessment method.

The assessement, 30-40 minute long on average, deals with the topics treated during the course and helps to evaluate the level of proficiency of the student, especially his/her capability of the student to elaborate critically and autonomously the principal concepts for applying them in different proposed contexts of high-tech polymers.

The assessment will be positive when the student will demonstrate to be able to express himself/herself clearly with appropriate scientific terminology and will answer in a correct way to questions relevant to the principal concepts of the course.
