Conoscenze

Knowledge

By the end of the course, the student will have acquired skills in aspects of phonology, morphology and natural syntax; natural linguistics will provide the theoretical basis for the analysis of a number of child language corpora (extracted from MacWhinney's CHILDES talkbank database) that will be analysed in the course of the lectures.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

Knowledge will be tested by means of a written report covering the analysis of an aspect of children's language (selected from phonological, morphological or syntactic aspects), taken from the corpora viewed, and its description in the light of the theories of natural linguistics.

Skills

The student will be able to apply the main aspects of phonology, morphology and natural syntax to the description of the natural processes active in L1 and L2 interlanguages. Knowledge of these processes present in language development will allow appropriate translation choices, when translating texts in which child language is present (topic introduced in the first part of the course held by Prof. Masi), and will allow, if the student is oriented towards teaching foreign languages, an understanding of the natural processes active during the various phases of second language learning and comprehension of the errors made by learners.

Assessment criteria of skills

Through class discussion during lessons and through the final report.

Comportamenti

Lo studente acquisirà e/o svilupperà sensibilità verso i processi naturali attivi nell’interlingua L1 e L2.

Behaviors

The student will acquire and/or develop sensitivity to the natural processes active in L1 and L2 interlanguage.

Modalità di verifica dei comportamenti

I comportamenti saranno verificati tramite discussioni durante le lezioni.

Assessment criteria of behaviors

Behaviour will be verified through discussions during lessons.

Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Prerequisites

Students should know English and Italian at least at B2 level of the CEFR for languages

Indicazioni metodologiche

Lezioni frontali e interattive

Teaching methods

Frontal and interactive lessons

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Syllabus

Functionalism as an epistemological approach to naturalness theory; semiotic principles for justifying language preference choices. Natural phonology: processes of lenition and fortition; natural morphology: markedness (defined by the criteria of biunivocity, iconicity and morphotactic and morphosemantic transparency); typological adequacy and system adequacy; natural syntax and textual complexity (ordo naturalis and ordo artificialis). Analysis of parts of child language corpora (Italian and English) using natural linguistics as a descriptive and explanatory model. Analysis of corpora of errors in English L2.

1) Dressler, W. U. (2003). Naturalness and Morphological Change. The handbook of historical linguistics, 461-471;

2) Dziubalska-Kołaczyk, K. (2006). Modern Natural Phonology: The theory for the future, 1-22.

Non-attending students info

The examination modalities are the same for attending and non-attending students. Non-attenders will also have to answer theoretical questions on the course content and on the two additional articles:

1) Dressler, W. U. (2003). Naturalness and Morphological Change. The handbook of historical linguistics, 461-471;

2) Dziubalska-Kołaczyk, K. (2006). Modern Natural Phonology: The theory for the future, 1-22.

Non-attending students are also invited to see the course moodle page, where the slides of the lectures will be uploaded from time to time.

Please note that the slides cannot be published, sold, or modified because they are the property of the lecturer and that they cannot be considered the sole source for exam preparation, as they serve solely as a reminder and summary of the content covered in the lessons.

Anyone who finds it difficult to understand the topics tackled is invited to come to the tutorial hours before taking the exam.

Commissione d'esame:

Presidente: Sabrina Noccetti

Assessment methods

The examination involves the writing of a paper in which the student must describe a linguistic phenomenon (from a choice of phonology, morphology and syntax) found in child language corpora and analyse it using natural linguistics as an epistemological theory.
